2012 Saxilby Mosaic

A much-loved village mosaic, created by local children in 2012, is being restored and rehoused in the village centre. We’re seeking donated materials or support to build its new plinth.

Help Restore Our Community Mosaic
A much-loved community mosaic, originally created by local school children to mark the Golden Jubilee in 2012, will soon be given a new permanent home in the heart of the village.

The mosaic was originally displayed on the village flood wall, but over time it sadly became detached due to prolonged exposure to the weather. Rather than see this important piece of local heritage lost, a dedicated group of volunteers stepped forward in 2023 to painstakingly remove the old adhesive by hand and complete the careful process of restoring the mosaic.

A new home in the village centre
Once the restoration was complete, the tiles were carefully stored by the Parish Council until a suitable new location was found. In 2025, it was agreed that the mosaic will be installed on a purpose-built brick plinth in the heart of the village, on the High Street outside Co-op Pharmacy. This new location will ensure the mosaic is protected, visible, and enjoyed by residents and visitors for many years to come.

The restoration work itself was carried out entirely by volunteers. The main remaining cost is the construction of the brick plinth on which the mosaic will sit.

How you can help
We are seeking the support of local residents, businesses and tradespeople to help us source donated or surplus building materials. Reclaimed or leftover materials are very welcome, and even a partial donation could make a real difference.
Our current materials wish list includes:

• Standard engineering charcoal grey bricks – 100
(for two band courses at ground level)

• Engineering charcoal grey bullnose bricks – minimum 124
(for the mosaic perimeter)

• Engineering charcoal grey bullnose corner bricks – minimum 4

• Reclaimed bricks – 516
(equivalent to approximately 8.6m² at 60 bricks per m²)

• Backing and below-ground Class A blocks – minimum 120

If you have any of these materials available, know someone who might, or can help in any way, we would love to hear from you.

What happens next
If we are unable to source all required materials through donations alone, we will look to launch a small community fund-raiser so residents can help complete the project by contributing towards the remaining costs.

Even if you’re unable to donate materials, simply sharing this appeal with others could help us reach someone who can.

Thank you for supporting the restoration of this special piece of our village’s history.
