A ground-breaking ceremony has taken place at the Memorial Field in Saxilby to mark the beginning of the construction of the new Saxilby and District Wheeled Park
The Wheeled Park can be used by skaters, bike riders, roller/in-line skate users, scooter users and wheel chair users.
The sunny conditions reflected the mood of those present as this community project took a step closer to completion.
A Wheeled Park in Saxilby has been a long-held aspiration of many local residents and the project is listed as a community project within the Saxilby with Ingleby Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP), following the community consultation which took place for the Plan.
The Wheeled Park is a compact design, split into two distinct areas to safely separate fast and slow moving users. It comprises of a split between street features and ramps, which cater for different styles of use, with many of the features suitable for absolute beginners. Sizes then increase up to 1.2m high ramps to facilitate progression.
Parish Council Chairman, Councillor David Cotton said
‘The Parish Council is very pleased to see this project coming to fruition. With the project being named in our Neighbourhood Development Plan, it is very satisfying for the Council to be able to deliver this project for the residents of, and visitors to, Saxilby. The Council’s Clerks have worked hard to gain funding for this project, and we extend our thanks to them and to Sport England, Lindum Homes and Stirlin Developments who have provided funding for the new facility.’
Elliot Hamilton of The Freestyle Collective who will be constructing the facility said
‘The Council have been excellent applying for grant funding, delivering our design to planning and working with developers and local residents to make the project happen. A special mention must also go to Catherine Amos of Studio Amos for supporting us through the planning process and providing professional support to the Council. After years in the making, we’re delighted to begin constructing a high-quality wheeled park that will serve the area for generations to come.’
A grant from Sport England’s Community Asset Fund, along with a developer contribution from Lindum Homes and a donation from Stirlin Developments has meant the capital costs of the project have cost the local taxpayer nothing.
Construction of the £90,000 facility is expected to take around six weeks and will provide an exciting new site for wheeled equipment users of all ages from Saxilby and surrounding areas.
